There are several things to consider when looking for a NAS and I’m going to cover what I think are the five most important factors:
1. Hard Drive Bays and RAID Types – How many drives do you need? What are the different types of RAID? Should you use Raid 5, 6, or 10?
2. CPU Power: What are you doing? This will help determine what you need.
3. Network Speed: Do you need 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, or 10 Gbps?
4. Power Usage: How much does it cost to run various NAS units?
5. DIY vs Pre-built NAS: Should you build your own or buy one off the shelf? Which is more secure, which is more open, etc.?
