The Best VPNs: Our Top Five | Speed, Privacy, Logging, Jurisdiction, Etc.

This day and age, it is very important to have a VPN.  As it stands, your ISP can see everything you are doing, and they log it for six months or more. This information is there, waiting to be sold, subpoenaed, etc. So, you really need that VPN.

First, a VPN allows you to browse the internet privately. It creates an encrypted tunnel to a different server, then you browse the internet from there. So, you use their client (or openVPN) and connect to their server. Your ISP (and other prying eyes) just see a raw stream of data. They don’t know if you are browsing Reddit, watching YouTube videos, or shopping for snakeskin jackets. They have no clue.

  1. Do yall game and/or stream with your VPN on? I know I don’t have the best upload speeds (fu Charter) as it is, so if I try to game or stream with a VPN, I run into lag and dropped frames.

Also wanted to add that PIA can be paid for with gift cards. Nearly any big brand (Starbucks, WalMart, Target, etc) gift card can be exchanged for a PIA subscription. Depending on the value of the card and what store, decides how many days of service you get. $20 is usually a few months. With the holidays coming up, you almost always end up with random gift cards for presents, not all of which may necessarily be useful to you; but if you need or want a VPN, it’s an easy way to get one.

  2. I have games and streamed plenty of times with the VPN on. It makes my ping go from 10 to about 25-30 usually… Sometimes a little higher, but always under 100 unless the server is really far away. I usually turn off the VPN for this stuff, but that is what happens when I forget. I am not too worried about anyone knowing that I play a game… then again you never know. dun dun duuuu.
