The Tek Live

Live? Starting to live dangerously.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Awwww... It's not really really really live. I was deceived!

posted 1 year 10 months ago

oh yeah, it was last night, i forgot and fell asleep.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

so live as in one take? :-)

posted 1 year 10 months ago

logan you should wear that jacket you use too. you were goofier.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Also he should threaten people at the end of his videos like he did a while back.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Those were glorious times, back then...

I'm still afraid that he's going to make me eat a spider.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

I think Lime Text was a project somebody in the Sublime Text community started a while ago as a free/open source replacement while the ST dev was MIA. It was pretty rudimentary when I last saw it.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Hey Logan, have you considered doing more live-streams with "The TEK"?

As weird is this sounds, this live-stream felt a bit more interactive with the community. also you can get quick community opinions from "strawpolls" during the tek and such when you are discussing shenanigans that these ISPS and companies are doing.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

they would just be copying linus LANshow

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Not neccesarily, Jay and Barnecules have a Live-stream and that is a bit interactive a bit with the community. I believe the guys from new-egg also have a live-stream. the strawpoll thing was just a way of maybe asking us quickly what we would do or what we think of something like this when logan is discussing shenanigans these iSP or companies in general are doing.

You're right...Newegg has the Alt+Tab show on Twitch and it's a live stream. So yes, it would be pretty cool if The Tek was live every week like the WAN Show, Tech Talk, and Alt+Tab.

i'm late, again, like last night ._.

A lot of people are moving away from sublime text to Brackets and Atom.

Brackets is open source and backed by Adobe. It is made specifically for web design and development. It's what I use personally.

Atom is made by Github and runs on Node.js, which initially made it slow but its now quite snappy. Since it's node based, extensions can be made with simple html, css and js which gives it quite a bit of potential.

They are probably going to out-develop sublime text soon if the sublime dev doesn't do some work on it soon

What is Wikipedia's next move  .... give 10,000 monkeys cameras and set them loose on the world? IMO the photographer should get even more royalties for such an unusual photograph.

It just proves the point that laws are only as ignorant as the people that wrote them.

Where were you guys streaming this live? On Youtube?

posted 1 year 10 months ago

They should say ... tapping the live streaming of the Tek ...

instead of theTek live.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

oh yeah...it's the tek!

missed the live but, i like the idea of live tek.

keep doing your thing and maintain healthy level of tinfoil.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Oh god! ... I'm a neck beard! .... pretty much illustrates the reason I don't go to Web MD ... lol

Again with what @Wendell is saying.

Shared infrastructure is already a thing, in the UK there are over 200 ISPs (yes 200, not 2, not 20. 200.) and at least 90% of them are running on BT's Openreach infrastructure which is mostly payed for by the 'BT Line Rental Fee' that every ISP's customer that uses there lines pays, it's currently £13 a month.

This is kept separate from there broadband/phone/tv divisor as the regulator insists on it.

The ISPs pay whatever they pay, but you can get unlimited fibre on offer at 80Mbps for £20 (plus line rental) and unlimited dsl at 5-10Mbps for £2.50 (that's two pounds 50 pence, not two hundred and fifty).

So that's how it's done, government having functional regulators and contracts using even a major provider to lay infrastructure nationwide and the government says that it will make £20 for every £1 invested in fibre.

( The largest ISP in the UK is BT, these are there prices for fibre optic: http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/broadband/packages/?infin... )

"You GNU this was going to happen!" I died from laughter.

I would go watch that musical.

IMO ... It is things like the H1B visa program that are hurting the country as a whole. While it may have short term profitability for the companies that are hiring these workers ... rather than hiring the 'homegrown' workers ... Most of these workers will return to their countries of origin and start competing businesses.

WP8 master race?

what the app requires to work in Windows Phone 8.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

You can use Atom instead of Lime Text. It's closer to Sublime Text and is also free/open source.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Musicals even nerdy ones aren't my thing, I do hope they put in a section showing Bill and Steve stealing the idea for Windows and Macintosh OS from Xerox PARC.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

I Quite enjoyed the live tek, you guys should do it more often. (if not make it the norm)

posted 1 year 10 months ago

This episode seemed to have a higher video quality compared to the other episodes.

Funny episode. Watching the footage raw made it funnier too. :D

posted 1 year 10 months ago

This is one of the best Tek Ever. They should do this more often.

It is false that there are more people in China with an IQ  above 130 than people in the USA. The right number should be around 111 depending if you use the Wechsler or the Stanford-Binet scale, as shown here:

Alliteration?

On the subject of code editors, light table is a pretty cool interactive editor for Clojure, and soon Python, I think.

Anyone else having audio sync problems?

I bet the Australian government is rubbing their hands together with glee at speeding google cars. They love their speed cameras !

All it takes is a mere 5km over and snap $$$$$. All I watch now is the speedo. Cheaper then hitting something.

I am seeing people post more then once on the win the x99 section it kinda makes me sad and throws off using the random number generator :(

posted 1 year 10 months ago

I liked the 'live' version quite a bit, actually.  I think that this format, with immediate audience participation, would be a great format change for "INBOX."  You could spend a portion of the show answering emails and comments, then use the back portion of the show to interact with immediate audience feedback.  I know you guys are pretty strung out with what you are already doing, but this would be a great addition on a less-frequent basis.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Logan  ... are you saying this is not you?

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Looks like the US is following the testbase of which was australia in terms of skilled workers and so called skill shortages. It all became much easier here once the right for unions to strike illegal.

Yeah lots of audio stutters with this live tek but still awesome! Rock on!

posted 1 year 10 months ago

I liked the live Tek - part of the fun is the rambling and tangents.

Also, I probably would not go to see "Nerds the Musical," not because it'd be bad, but because I don't like musicals.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

so, i'm gonna repeat what i said last time they talked about the whole twitch mess, because they made the same mistake again: they arent muting the livestream sound, they are muting the video on demand archive of the livestream.

Also: I still have yet to find an official source confirming google bought twitch, basicly every article on it states "sources fammiliar with the matter" told them that there was a deal. In this wording your average livestreamer could be "fammiliar with the matter"

That right angle adapter idea is awesome,

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Not really for motherboards, but I've been looking for a (preferably small) upwards facing right-angle micro USB adapter, more for the purpose of DIY phone docks. I currently have one with a cutout for one, but no cable to go in it.

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Wow! Wendell is now HD in both video and audio.  Please keep it this way XD.

In regards to the android FB messenger app:

The problem lies w/ Android's terrible permission system. The app is not actually looking at your text messages or recording your conversations, but it needs access to stuff that are under the permission umbrellas like "receive text messages (SMS)" to add phone numbers in your phone book to the messenger app. FB has an article about it here. Now maybe they are looking at more than they let on in this article, but I have a close friend who worked on this app at FB- it's not doing anything sneaky.

America's H1B-scheme mirrors our Australian 457-visa for overseas workers; this has been a contentious issue in our country for quite some time.457-visa holders are utilized a lot in the Australian mine-service sector.

I wanted to watch the live stream but no youtube live streaming for germany :(

Firefox addon Proxmate didn't help with it. Anyone knows an addon that will fix this for me?

posted 1 year 10 months ago

Usually a paid proxy service would help with this...there are always links on the teksyndicate page for different ones.

Hey guys , greatings from Bulgaria hehe :) .

Just because of that article I decided to join the forums here , I've been watching your shows for a while now , and I love it .

It's very odd that this one is in the news , the painting of that statue was actually in 2011 ... It was cleaned up , but some people continued to paint different things . The most recent is this one link .
