The Tek 0041: Why We Are Not at CES

We are not at CES this week. It's silly. Instead we have a crazy episode of The Tek.

Here are the links and notes from the show:

Geek/ Culture/ Internet/ Policy

  • 4k like streams at today's 1080p file sizes
  • same res is about half size... takes forever to encode

HDfpga or x265 might be the one you are thinking of Logan.

LOL @19:00 Christian Mingle...

posted 1 year 3 months ago

He mixes the specification with the implementation. Specifications (h.265) can have patents but are no code so they can't be opensource. The actual implementations (x265) however can be opensource...

edit: Wendell said it's a protocoll... http://i.imgur.com/L3J6n.jpg

I can still get to the download link of the CS2

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html

posted 1 year 3 months ago

The 'exciting' thing about this mistake was that everyone was like "Holy shit, cs2 for free! That means we dont have to buy a photoshop license!"

Unfortunately it doesn't exactly work that way, Adobe clearly did not intend for you to own this license, which makes it dubious for commercial use at best. Since it can't be used commercially, there is now nothing to be excited about, you might as well stick to your pirated newer versions since the legality of its use is pretty much the same.

Great show as usual! These kinds of intro challenges with hot sauce are entertaining hahaha. I think you probably still have a number of viewers that don't know how to turn off adblock for a single site.  You doing a 15 sec segment in the Tek of you just showing how to reveal the add-on bar and click the "Disable on teksyndicate.com" option for Adblock could be helpful.

Logan if zweihander will be on the first page again you should drink energy drinks :P

I really like this Mars one mission idea. But I feel there are alternative motives by these corporations. I know Space X isn't doing what they are doing for the betterment of the human race, it's for minerals on astroids and what not. There are huge profits to be made in space and I think everyone needs to keep their eyes on the companies doing this.

Logan (and Wendell), the Star Trek game you guys couldn't remember the name(s) to is Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force or Star Trek: Elite Force II (the Voyager title was dropped for some reason).  Haven't played them myself, so I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a joke that you guys couldn't remember the name.

posted 1 year 3 months ago

If you like Star Trek and ever wanted to fight The Borg and co. play it.

Quake 3 Engine cool music sounds etc. but remember it's an old game so don't expect high res textures ... imagine it's a modern consolegame ... they still look horrible today. ;D

I still remember that LOIC thing. I had it but I never used it because I had no reason to.

Pity you weren't at CES, because buffalo were showing off a router on 802.11ad and it was getting ~7gb/s

Though, they were kind of cheating by not using radio for the transfer, Still impressive though.

Why is the internet in America bad?

@petsoukos

We're still using our ancient copper infrastructure, which has been around in some places since the 1950s.  Copper is a great (and relatively cheap) conductor, but there are much better ways to transmit data.  A while back, some European countries (I can't remember which ones) replaced or upgraded their telephone infrastructure to a SONET like system (Called Synchronous Digital Hierarchy [SDH]), and while it's been around for a while, it's got a redundant fiber optic backbone so all they have to do is replace damaged sections when they break or add new hardware to increase speeds.  It's really interesting and was proposed in the US in the 1980s during/after the breakup of AT&T, though it was cost-prohibitive at the time.

@Forren

Same here for us Greeks. Copper everywhere. Only recently (~5 years) did the private telecoms companies start to lay down some fiber in big cities. A couple of months ago some companies started advertising VDSL up to 54Mbps! But, people in rural areas or small towns are stuck with 2mbits.

posted 1 year 2 months ago

You are lucky to have 2mbits.  Where I live (Rural Western Australia) our connection speed is around 200kbits

Forren: Man youwe got a really big point for your avatar :D PS was one of my favourite childhood games ! Didnt see that stuff for really long time

posted 1 year 3 months ago

@Jinn

My handle is the direct romanization of the PSIV Wren's Japanese name, "Forren" as noted by the Phantasy Star Compedium Translation.  I adopted the name because I thought it sounded cool, and was easy to remember; it also has the unique quality of being somewhat unique, since the only other "Forren" I've ever heard of is a professional football (soccer) player from Norway.  PSIV is probably my favorite JRPG of all time, so I'm glad you like it.

That said, I don't think this is an appropriate place to have an off topic discussion like this, and probably will not be responding unless it actually has to do with my first post (about the Star Trek games) or second (about the state of American telecommunications infrastructure).

( EDIT: Dafuq? This is in completely the wrong place. )

If I recall correctly, the US government eventually did make the telcom companies lay down fiber, but unfortunately for us, their terms did not include the stipulation that they had to implement it for their customers (and as that would have cost more, they decided to instead stick with their amortized copper networks). This resulted in tens of thousands of miles of fiber being laid down and never turned on, it's called 'dark fiber'. For years now, Google has been buying up every bit of dark fiber they can get their hands on, and the few who noticed or cared were wondering what they were going to do with it.

Now we know - and what it means for us is that Kansas City is just the beginning, just a test bed. Once they figure everything out, I have every bit of hope and confidence that they will expand rapidly and take the country by storm. With any luck, though, they won't have to be everywhere. The very nature of their service means any other company in their service area would be out of the general slow-internet business if everyone in that service area knew about it, so that means competing internet providers will have to provide equivalent or better service, or be forced out of the market. I can't wait.

posted 1 year 3 months ago

I see, a great addition to the information presented.  I'm aware that Google has been buying dark fiber, though to my knowledge the majority of our fiber optic networks went from San Jose to Seattle (to Redmond, actually).  Interesting to see that it wasn't the case.

 HAHAHAHAH 19:46. Now we know who's getting thos Christian mingle ads.

posted 1 year 3 months ago

Speaking of Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, make sure you pre-order it through store.frictionalgames.com when it eventually becomes availible, if they do it like they did Amnesia, you'll get a drm free version for all platforms (win/mac/lin) AND a steam key if you so desire.

1. For people who dont like ads - use adblock... it is nothing immoral. Immoral is company stalking anything youre doing on internet and putting it on this site. (For example on this site there are at least 8 tracking shit things)You can surf whatever you want without anyone making fun of you. Therefore it is called privacy. I respect those who say privacy doesnt exist, but disrespect those who are fighting for and against it at the same time. If you want totalitarian state... fight for it, if you want to live in democracy, respect human laws.

2. When I remember, Logan said, he will be putting here just really good ad-stuff. Yet it is a thing of google doing it... and of course its your fault for surfing the web.

3 When I remember ... It was really fun when Logan made jokes about people harming themself in their shows... today... logan is the funny thing.

And no.. im no hater in reality I really liked the show and still I blindly hope that it will be better. Those three things were that made me by watching the tek like : WTF dude what are you doing? And the last thing... this is opinion = my feedback not stuff for tekfanboys to argue about so chill out take a deep breath.

I was about to say the same thing on #3.

I agree, too bad the site is now a techology press placeholder for a new religion, I think it missed it's demographic.
