Chinese Company Uses Leaked Photos to Copy, Patent iPhone 5 Design

According to GizChina, a Chinese manufacturer has created an iPhone 5 knockoff using leaked photos and designs.  The GooPhone i5, as it's being called, has apparently been patented for its design.  This could effectively block the sale of the Apple iPhone 5 in China.

The specs of the Android-based GooPhone are as follows: Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core 1.4Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, Android 4.0 ICS with an iOS 6 theme, 8 mega-pixel rear camera, and a 4 inch screen with retina display resolution of 1280 x 720.

Considering the recent legal activities of Apple, I find this amusing.  Of course it's incredibly scummy behavior on GooPhone's part, but I can't help but think that Apple is getting a dose of its own medicine.

A phone that looks like the iPhone but runs Android. The perfect combo.

ICS for a matter of fact. Not gingerbread. Literally the perfect mobile device. Makes me wonder, will they allow interchangeable ROMs to run on the phone without rooting or unlocking it as long as it is ICS or newer? Making an open source mobile device would decimate any competition.

The internals of the device don't seem to be that different from a Samsung or the like, so if the company normally makes phones [legally] the most they needed to do it get their hands on the phone case itself. Which by looking at the picture posted looks rather blah to me (two-tone).

Going back to my original question, if they normally make phones, I would image they have some access to a local/regional carrier it should be too difficult for them to work into their contract that they push the next revision of Android to their GooPhones just like any other carrier would. I guess with the iPhone skin there may be some problems but for now I doubt anyone cares.

I love how they are using Apples dirty tactics against them! Hilarious. We need some small company to do the same thing here in the US. Maybe Apple would learn to play nice and stop using the courts to eliminate competition. Damn monopolies!

heh, it looks like a nice phone too!

This has to be the best article I've read all week. Apple finally getting what it deserves; bitch slapped by two companies, and they're still not giving up.

Good god I loled hard. This is epic news

I think the game has changed now. Now all the tech companies are playing the game of:

"How Much Money Can You Cost Apple?"

           "(The Monopoly Edition)"

Ehh this always happens with the new iPhone. it wont sell that much that Apple will care. It will please all the android fanboys who think this is gonna really piss off apple.

This is great news! Only problem I see is that Apple can either make the design anyways because the company who owns the patent won't have enough money to battle Apple in court. Or they will just buy them out.

This may finally initiate me into the realm of "portable...stuff". The tegra chip really does blow me away.

Nice specs, really nice specs, though, I'm with Logan, I don't like the feel or look of Apple devices.

I agree. I handle numerous mobile phones, since I work as an IT-Tecnician at a large company in Denmark. and the iPhone doesn't feel right in my hands. The look & feel of IOS has never appealed with me, it looks and feels out-dated.

The best work phone I have had in my years in the IT businessis the Nokia N8, it does what is has to, syncronize my mail and calendar, and the battery lasts for days. I have the Samsung Nexus for private use, and this phone, from my point of view, is better looking regarding design, and the ICS running on the phone is marvelous. no hiccups so far.

Be warned... chinese companies do this all the time, they did it with the iphone 4, iphone 4s, and some ipods. They usually turn out to be terrible. They often lie about the specs, opertate slowly, jerky motion, and are barely translated into English properly.

The "AirPhone" is a really cheap copycat, the GooPhone Y5 (iPhone 4 copycat) is a lot better then that.

the only people that can fall into buying that are the same ppl apple said, that couldn't tell the difference between products...ignoring the box and such..

Sadly, anything portable I use ethier gets smashed in to pieces, or I lose my phone and find out someone on my locker row has the same model and they say they bought it yesterday -_-

There are a lot good apps to track your phone if it gets stolen or lost.

  • Where's my Droid
  • Prey

And I think AVG for Android also has that feature build in.

This actually looks freaking awesome! I wonder what apple is thinking of this haha.

Apple iPhone will never be blocked from sales anywhere because Apple makes the best phone on earth!

Even the iPhone4s from last fall is still far superiour to any other device being launched today - In fact, I would still argue the 4s puts the S3 to shame! And let's face it, the HTC One-X is trash.

Plus, it doesn't even matter - I heard last week that Apple is going to buy Google next year and use the Google assets to take down all of Samsung.

Can't wait for the new iPhone. I will for sure be in line! I know it will have a 4.5" screen and other cool stuff!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! APPLE BUY GOOGLE?!?! I DON'T SEE THAT ONE HAPPENING ANYTIME SOON! Google is a much bigger company then apple is by a long shot!

 Don't feed the trolls.

Apple is the largest company in the world right now. The could buy Google, Samsung, HTC and even ANDROID if they wanted to.

I have no fear - Apple will not be banned in China, not with how they're going all thermnuclear on the other companies in court protecting their trademarks and copyrights.

Sorry to disapoint you, but Apple is not.

Look at this nice list on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companies_by_revenue). Look who is in place 9, it's Samsung. Apple you ask? Well scroll down, to place 43.

Apple isn't even making half of what Samsung makes (247.5 USD billion vs 108.2 USD billion). Apple might be "worth" more, but that's only in the stocks, you know, the people at Wallstreet, those who make money on saying that things are worth more than they really are?

I know that I'm feeding the troll, but you know, it might be fun to keep him, as a pet that is.

Lulz, this is hilarious, China is at it again, I guess they are sort of beating Apple at their own game. If specs look really good, but the quility of the components will determine ultimatley whether or not this device will perform well. I'm sure it will be rootable/unlockable, the question is whether it will garner enough community support to recruit developers. Look promosing but don't count on it.
