PopSci Sees Smartphones As Future of Gaming

PopSci seems to think that smartphones are the future of gaming, and that they'll overtake console gaming in the long run.  Consoles become outdated within a few years of their release, whereas smartphones could potentially be backwards compatible as well as (realtively) powerful.

The future which PopSci envisions includes both mobile gamers, who play mostly simple app-based games, and more serious gamers, who would hook their phone up to a TV or something.  They look at the ability to digitally download games, as well as the portability of smartphones, as the things which will set them ahead of standard consoles.

It's an interesting idea, and we're currently seeing instances of smartphones and tablets playing more complex games.  I doubt this will be the death of PC gaming, but it could have some interesting implications for console gaming...

Let me know what you think.

I plan on putting all my games on mobile android, no qeustion they will be powerful enough, the only factor is two things, one steam needs to get in gear on the mobile platform so people can easily publish games there, and the other is battery life, its to the point where the screen is the most power hungry thing on it and there isn't much improving that

I think in a matter of 50 or so years, gaming will be all mobile in a sense, because the tech would be so advanced. I'd still want more options, like Keyboard and mouse, and large monitors.

Think about it, we already have quad core phones out with a gig of ram. What else does it need? Well as soon as ATI or Nvidia start making micro GPUs and Phone companies like HTC and Samsung start implementing that hardware into the phones, all its going to take is game developers to start making games. Maybe a USB dongle as a joystick? that would be awesome. Or you slide your phone out to have the analog buttons.
