Above, you will see a video featuring the BFC Colour Tweaker. This mod simply removed the color grading.
DICE really does not want their game modded. They have always wanted total control over the user experience. So, they have threatened to permanently ban anyone using this mod as it might give them an unfair advantage (or disadvantage). The funny thing is that if you use an aimbot you do not get banned. You simply get your stats reset.
I understand that DICE wants a "perfect" game... but what about user choice? I know they hate mods, but there has to be some solution. I frankly prefer the modded version. I'm not a big fan of color grading. What do you think about the mod and DICE's stance on it?

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoBad company 2... is that you...? The game should have looked like this by default in my opinion, sure it makes it look less war torn but at least you can actually see the color instead of a lifeless representation of the map.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI dislike the color grading, and I used this mod. No way does it make it unfair, in fact it's much harder to spot enimies, since the suits will actually blend into the buildings. I thought I loved DICE, but as always, EA has to take a good game and throw it down in the dirt.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoWhat a shocker. DICE will never make any good games as long as EA is their publisher, well too bad EA bought the studio in 04 and everything they touch goes to hell.
Can't wait to get my hands on Rekoil. A fully modable game with dedicated servers. Wow gaming is surley going forward these days...

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI haven't played BF3, so I can't comment on whether color grading confers any advantages or disadvantages in gameplay, but it does seem excessive for DICE to swat down such a basic graphical option. Toggling color grading shouldn't even require a mod. I almost always turn it off if I have the option. Unless DICE release a very convincing explanation, this kind of strict wet-blanketing of players' choices will alienate people. BF3 is already an EA/Origin game, though, so maybe DICE figures it's already too late to seem cool to PC gamers.
As for color grading: Especially in the video's examples, color grading makes games look like hyperreal Jerry Bruckheimer/Tony Scott movies. I'd rather have a game look crisp and believable as an interactive environment in a game, instead of aping movies that are (poorly) aping "real life". I suppose color grading doesn't always have that effect, but BF3 and the Crysis games certainly do.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoBeing from Sweden, I used to be proud of DICE. I remember when EA bought DICE, I said back then "This is it. EA will ruin dice too". Shit. I must be psycich. The modders MADE DICE A SUCCESS! How can DICE stab us loyal fans in the back like this? We only want some friggin colour in a game we love, its not like we are asking for a DICE sex tape or anything...

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI honestly like DICE's version better as it looks war torn like. That being said the blue version does make the game pretty.
I think they shouldn't have given perm bans and instead warned everyone using the program, I even think a temporary ban is even too much. Imo a warning is enough, then they can start giving out temp bans to people who didn't get the message.
It's true that this is just a legit graphics mod but it is their game and if they don't want us to mod it, fair enough, but it is still far too overboard to perm ban people. I hope the people who got their accounts banned can get their accounts back.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI think allowing mods is a great way to keep a game alive. Games like the first few COD's for example had a mod tool pack, and many people made mods and custom maps. It let the game survive much longer then most would. Hell, I still play cod2 and make maps for it to this day. The same can be said for the HL2 engine. But for most games it seems the modding support has really died off.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoThe problem is apparantly that the mod removes the sun as well, and one version of the mod can change damages and such. Still sucks that they dont listen to their community, who apparently want the option to remove it.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI wouldn’t call it cartoon. Every map previously looked like an overcast day. This mod looks as though the invisible cloud cover has been removed.
As far as DICE/EA banning people who use this mod, that’s a bit be rash. They should simply release the game so it can be self-hosted and allow us to do whatever we want; mod, LAN hosting etc.
I can understand why they are doing this the mod may give people an advantage of sorts. They have taken a stand for NO mods; period. This is just another one that looks harmless, which has been denied.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoThe real question is: Is it necessary for every fucking game not made by Valve to be activated online and be played whilst connected to the internet? I think every single developers are trying to be like Valve but not in a user-friendly way.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoHere's how the end of the world is going to happen, EA and Apple will merge and they'll try to buttfuck each others company so hard at the same time, that being physically imppossible, will cause a breakdown in the timespace continuum shreding the fabric of time-space itself
and you were worried about a zombie appocolypse

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoWow. I dropped BF3 out of principle the moment premium happened. Looks like I didn't make a mistake.
It's such a shame because sales figures aren't conveying to EA the harm they're doing to the industry.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoPersonally, I like the grading a little better on most levels shown in the video. But it shouldn't be a bannable thing to adjust the colouring. I guess when your buisness model is multiplayercentric like EA's you want to control all aspects of the game to ensure a unified experience, but they should really focus on real hacks and not changing colour grading.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoThis is just idiotic. They should know making a game for the PC that PC gamers are going to mod the hell out of it. Honestly I think they should just leave it alone and worry about people who are modding and hacking to actually give themselves an advantage.

posted 7 months 2 weeks ago"This application was first released on the 3rd of October, 2012. It allows you to edit the Battlefield 3 game files by tweaking the colour and lighting settings for each map." <--- that is why it's ban worthy.
The MD5 hash of the game no longer matches what DICE sends out and that is often used to indicate if the game has been modded for good or bad. It's a very easy and reliable way to catch cheaters.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoThe mod used in the video doesnt actually change anything in the MD5 files. It only changes data in the expansion maps. The vanilla maps are located on the MD5 files and are not fully(safely) supported by the mod. Instead, most people who care about the aestetics are using FXAA and MSAA injectors which also help.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI use this mod and have not yet been banned. There is a bit of confusion going around regarding this mod. The Realm BF3 Color mod is safe(at the moment) but there is another mod circling the net which can get you banned because it doesnt only make changes to the color pallets and filters, but also changes weapon stats. That one is the one that people are being banned for. According to a couple of forums, people are only being banned from PunkBuster servers so it is likely that other servers will allow it. I havent heard of DICE actually banning people though. Its only been server level banning.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoI like the way the game looks without that horrible mod, I also like Dice's stance on modding
Just because it's a PC game doesn't mean that EVERY game should allow modding, and in games like thios modding is a big NO

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoDoesn't anyone read youtube descriptions?
According to the creater and uploader, no one has been banned for using this mod. DICE never even said they would ban people for using it. A single DICE employee simply warned people that they COULD get banned. Nothing more. He has since removed his tweet, too.

posted 7 months 2 weeks agoahhhhh i dont know.. i mean we know how PB works right.. PB scans the files, scan their md5, their size, their details, if after the scan it does detect a 100% compatible files, that means your using modded files which my any means equal BAN0. that's why it is so risky to use this mod on pb servers.. at least we are free to use it on non-pb servers, that's for sure.

posted 5 months 3 weeks agoShould be noted that the mod isn't "adding colours", it's just removing colour grading. The colours seen aren't really how the game is designed to be played either (since it was designed with colour grading permanently enabled) and that's why it looks a bit unrefined. But the fact that it still looks better is a testament to how fucking shit colour grading is. It's up there with excessive "HDR" (which is, in effect, reality low dynamic range) and excessive bloom as the worst graphics "enhancements" to games in recent years.
