This dude built a "real life" Star Trek phaser. Just watch the freaking video.

 The smoky room lets you see the beam :(. and the laser is just a high wattage burning laser, that you can buy, or make out of a blu-ray burner. It doesnt do much more than burn/pop dark colored objects. Still cool, though. I wish I had one.
